Based on various interviews and discussions with toppers, we are presenting the CBSE Class 12 board toppers’ strategies and plans which they followed to outstand others in the boards. You must know the toppers’ secrets to have a stress-free preparation to lead one of the many exams you will be appearing in your life.

“Toppers do not study different material, they study the material differently”. Following are the top secrets to be class 12 board toppers:

1. Thorough Preparation from NCERT textbooks

Most of the students mainly read from books other than NCERT. According to them NCERT does not provide enough knowledge and is boring. However, when discussed with most of the toppers, it revealed that the main mantra of their success was “following the NCERT Books.”  As per the toppers, the NCERT books for CBSE are designed with special focus upon developing conceptual understanding and clarity about the entire syllabus among students. The language used in NCERT books is easy to understand and therefore they must be considered the perfect companion for last minute speedy preparation as well as revision. They used other books too but as a reference.

2. Be Your Own Teacher

Toppers teach themselves and also their buddies. Most of the toppers follow the self teaching model in which they write and rewrite the stuff they studied. They participate in subject related discussions with their friends in school. This helps not only remembering the studied material but also to understand the subject better. Therefore, they are able to recall the subject information at the time of examination. This makes studying a fun activity rather than a burden.

3. Study the Subject You Know Least

Everyone has a separate set of favourite subjects in which he/she would be always scoring good marks. Most of the students devote more time to their favourite subjects where they score maximum.

However, toppers have revealed that they devoted more time to the subjects they found most difficult. Maths is one such subject in most of the cases. If you want to be a leader, you should devote extra hours to study such subject. Studying over and over again to master the most difficult concepts makes you master in the subject. “There is a famous quote keep your enemies close. This works well not only in the real world, but in the school education and competitive exams also.” This is what one of the toppers said.

4. Study as Long as You Enjoy and Enjoy as Long as You Study

Most of the students or their parents keep asking “How long should one study to be amongst the toppers”. When asked to some of the toppers, here is what they said.

When asked about his daily study duration, one of the toppers said “It is not about the number of hours but the quality of time you invest in your self study. I used to study as long as I enjoyed. However, I ensured average four hours a day study at home with a break of 10 -15 minutes after every hour. He further suggested finding the time that suits you the most to study calmly and restlessly.

Like a topper who said she used to put in around two hours after school and three hours at night including a 15 minute break in between. She never followed the ‘early to bed, early to rise’ formula.

Some other ranker told that he was comfortable studying early in the morning and that worked for him.

This variation shows that studying at your own time really helps focus. Successful students often space their work out over shorter periods of time and rarely try to cram all of their studying into just one session. So if you aspire to join the hall of fame 2018 examination, then learn to be consistent with your studies and to have regular but shorter study periods that might come out to be more productive for you.

5. Regular Study Routine

The toppers follow a regular, daily study routine. After the teacher has explained a chapter or topic in the class, toppers always do homework on the course. This has helped them understand the topics or chapter which appeared to be complex to most others. Any doubt leftover is then discussed with their teacher to make that simple. Following this practice helped clear all their doubts. Moreover, studying regularly made them mentally and emotionally more prepared for each study session which proved to be more productive.

Toppers suggestion, “If you have to change your schedule due to some unexpected event, you must get back to your schedule as soon as the event has passed. Moreover, if you have lost some time due to the event it must be compensated at the earliest”. Most of the students keep wasting 1 or 2 days every fortnight without any compensation. This lost time has a devastating effect in your final result.

6. Solve past few years’ papers and practice papers

This is yet another most important secret of success. Most toppers have solved previous years papers not once but twice. One of the toppers has revealed that after preparing each chapter she used to solve previous year questions from chapter. Any difficulty she encountered while solving the papers would be her topics of revision for the next day. Solving past year papers or practice papers not even helped her give edge to her preparations but also made her familiar to the style, type and format of the questions being asked in the exam. She had solved all those last years question papers in last month of preparation. In this phase she attempted full paper just like it is done in the real exam. While attempting any previous year paper, she marked every single question she was unable to answer completely or correctly. She revised all the concepts related to such questions and solved these questions one more time before the final exam.

7. Healthy Mind Lives in Healthy Body

Eating quality food and drinking plenty of fluids helps you stay healthy. Therefore, healthy food and drinks must be included in your daily diet to keep you physically and mentally fit. It is important to take timely and light meals for a good health and in turn for a sharp brain. Like other body parts, your brain also needs time to relax after being exhausted throughout the day. You must dedicate some time for entertainment, relaxation and some light physical exercises. In between long study hours find some time to listen to music, dance or for any other hobby. 6 - 7 hours of sound sleep is must if you want to excel in class 12 board examinations.

8. Explore the Internet and Smartphones

“Internet and smartphone is not all about the online games, whatsapp, facebook and twitter etc. For the students it can be the real tutor.” this is what the toppers said. The Internet and mobile offers countless opportunities for learning via mLearning apps, interactive animations, you tube video lectures, online tests and online doubt discussion. Most of the toppers while revealing their success stories told that they often took help of such educational tools when they wanted to go beyond what their books could offer. This helped them to gain the required knowledge in quick time, which would otherwise have been extremely difficult.

9. Identify Your Weaknesses

One can improve only if he/she knows his/her weaknesses. It is very important to know which particular topics disturb you when you are preparing for the exam. After every test or practice session, identify the topic/concept you are not able to apply. Make a list of those topics as the weak areas where you need to work more. Your main concern should be to strengthen these topics without neglecting topics you already know.

Practice on mLearning Platform by Moducation gives you the list of all the topics where you are weak if you do proper Self Analysis after every test or practice session.  Here, you can learn more about mLearning Platform.

10. Revise more and more

“Practice makes a man perfect.” There is nothing new with this principle as everyone knows that the harder you work the more you succeed. Toppers also follow the same principle. They planed their study schedule such that they were able to revise entire syllabus at least thrice before appearing for the final exams. Before final exam, they had at least one extra revision of all the concepts involved in the questions they were unable to answer correctly when they were having practice of previous years board papers and other practice papers.

It may appear difficult, but that is what the toppers have successfully managed to achieve. By studying regularly throughout the year, especially during the pre board exams you can achieve this impossible looking target.

Conclusion:

Reading the entire article above it may be concluded that every student should work hard but in a strategic way without manipulating personal interests, habits and ambitions. Instead of thinking about the result, just try to do your best so that you can proudly say “I have done my best”. To become a leader in board exams one must remember following important points:

Thorough Preparation from NCERT textbooks, Study the Subject You Know Least, Study as Long as You Enjoy and Enjoy as Long as You Study, Solve past few years’ papers and practice papers, Stay healthy, Explore Technology, Identify the weaknesses and practice a lot.
