CBSE Board Chemistry Paper Tips And Tricks to Score Above 90% in Class 12 | Pattern | Revision Plan | Important Topics and Questions

Posted By Admin on February 24, 2018

CBSE class 12 board exams are approaching fast. Students are studying day and night not only to score maximum marks in board exams but this preparation will also help them in competitive exams like NEET and JEE. CBSE board chemistry paper will be held on 13th March 2018. The pupose of this article by Shweta Singh is to provide CBSE Board Chemistry Paper Tips And Tricks to Score Above 90% in Class 12, Pattern of CBSE board Chemistry Paper, Last Minute Revision Plan for CBSE Chemistry, Important Topics and Questions for Class 12 CBSE Chemistry.

Chemistry is one subject which requires clear and strong conceptual understanding for scoring well in CBSE Board Examination. According to my observations of previous years papers, the Chemistry theory paper is the one which is most tricky as well as a most easy to score a perfect ton. Tricky because it is concept based and has around 50+ one mark questions which need great control over expression and scientific terminology; easy because those, who read questions carefully and have command over concepts, score really well (you can score full marks in chemistry). The theory paper is designed in such a way that questions are based on application of concepts.

CBSE Board Chemistry Paper Pattern:

Theory paper will consist of 5 sections. Section A will include 5 questions of 1 mark each, Section B will include 5 questions of 2 marks each, Section C having 12 questions of 3 marks each, Section D will include 1 value based question of 4 marks and Section E will have 3 questions of 5 marks each. All questions are compulsory but internal choice is often given in one question of 2 marks, one question of 3 marks and three questions of 5 marks.

Most 3 and 5 marks questions are further divided in several parts, effectively making 50+ questions of 1 mark each.

Immportant Chemistry Books:

CBSE board paper is completely NCERT based so the first and foremost thing is to cover the NCERT books thoroughly. All Intext questions and back exercises should be thoroughly practiced,  especially the Numericals of Physical Chemistry.

Solving previous 5 years board papers will be very useful during gap before chemistry paper.

Physical Chemistry Tips:

Easiest to score marks are the numericals which have a weightage of 12-14 marks. There are marks for writing individual steps so even if there is a calculation error you can score marks. While solving numerical, always write the formula first, then substitute the values and ensure to write units with the answer. While doing Numerical problems from chapter 'Solutions' ensure using Van't Hoff factor, for 'Electrochemistry' write balanced equation before using Nernst equation and check twice if they have given reduction potential or oxidation potential.

Organic Chemistry Tips:

The area which the students find most troublesome is Organic Chemistry where they find it difficult to learn the equations. This section has a weightage of about 30 marks distributed to chapter wise and categorywise questions. Again maximum marks are concept based like questions on physical property comparisons, comparisons based on chemical behaviour of two compounds. Besides this there are easy scoring as 2-3 marks are for distinction tests between compounds, 2-3 marks for direct questions on Name reactions (there are total 27 name reactions in syllabus), 2 marks for nomenclature, 2 marks for reaction mechanism (there are just 6 mechanisms in syllabus) and 3-4 marks for chemical conversions.

Inorganic Chemistry Tips:

For Inorganic chemistry maximum marks lie with chapter p-block elements which are again conceptual 1 mark questions, of which 2-3 marks are for structure based especially compounds of Xenon, Inter halogen compounds and oxo acids. Allotropic forms of Phosphorous and Sulphur are important. Questions based on PCl5, H2SO4, O3, HNO3, NH3, oxo acids of Phosphorous and Halogens are frequently asked. There are trend based questions for 2-3 marks where students are asked to arrange a group of compounds in Increasing or Decreasing order of a given property.

Another area to score easily is Coordination compounds where VBT and CFT based questions are must for practice. In d- and f-block, most of the one mark questions are based on properties of Transition Elements. Ensure to revise KMnO4 and K2Cr2O7 with their preparations.

Other Important Chemistry Chapters:

There are 5 chapters having weightage of 3 marks each: Surface chemistry, Polymers, Biomolecules, Chemistry in daily life and Principles of Extraction of Elements. There are direct definition based questions worth 3-4 marks asked from these chapters. Students can score full marks in these chapters with little more concentration on condensation and addition polymers, Reducing and non - reducing sugars, Mutarotation, isoelectric point of amino acids, soaps and detergents, types of important drugs, Froath floatation, raosting, smelting, Leaching etc.

Revision Plan for Chemistry Paper:

Revise all name reactions, iportant formulae of physical chemistry, Structures of oxoacids, VBT and CFT 1 day prior to chemistry board exam. In exam hall also keep 15 minutes for last minute review and revision of the answers written on board answer sheet.

Presentation Skills Still Pay:

Overall, scoring well in chemistry is easy, but anxiety takes a toll. So carefully use the reading time allotted to you. There are many one markers in the paper so try to attempt the paper in sequence, as this helps to win the examiner psychologically. Draw the diagrams clearly and avoid multiple cutting or over writing. In case of error, strike your answer with single line to maintain neatness and re-attempt the answer. Underline the important terms used in the answers. All these give positive approach to your presentations.

All the best!
