CBSE CLASS 12 BIOLOGY Tips to Score Maximum Marks in Board Paper Exam

 

Prof. Virender Verma - Director, Springbells School, Saharanpur is teaching biology to students for CBSE board and medical entrance exams for last 35 years. Several hundred students have become successful doctors after learning biology from him. He has explained every detail about preparation of biology and gave following tips depending on when you start learning biology. He emphasized “Students must focus on basic understanding of the concepts in biology rather than cramming it”.

As CBSE board exams are inching closer, students are getting nervous about their weak subjects. It is very important to prepare well for CBSE class 12 board exams because these exams are not just for passing the boards but to accelerate your career. Admission in good college, other than medical college, for higher education is purely based on your 12 board result. So, you need to prepare well and score better in your board exams.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the class 12 Biology examination on March 27, 2018. Here are some Tips to Score Maximum Marks in CBSE Board CLASS 12 BIOLOGY Paper. For NEET aspirants, admission to medical college does not depend on your percentage in board exams but may need you to score marks above certain percentage. Moreover, biology is the major component in NEET and more than 50% biology questions in are asked from class 12 NCERT syllabus. CBSE Board Biology Paper Tips for Exam Day

 

CBSE Biology Tips 1 - Reading Time:

CBSE gives you 15 minutes time for reading the question paper before you start writing the answers of board exam. Proper utilization of these 15 minutes can increase you score significantly. Reading time can be used for complete planning for your answers. While reading question paper, mark the sub-questions in every question and underline the important phrases or terms asked. If possible you must identify and mark the questions that you will be answering using flow-charts, diagrams, points or essay format.

CBSE Biology Tips 2 - Rough Sheet for planning the long answers:

Smart utilization of the rough sheet or space provided or marked for rough work can increase your marks in CBSE board exam of any subject. Before you start writing any long answer, note down important headings on a rough sheet or the space for rough work. Here, you can include the keywords to be used and sub-headings to be used in the answers.

CBSE Biology Tips 3 - Maintain Word-limit

Writing more than required not only wastes your time but also limit your potential resulting in poor marks CBSE board examinations. Based on the marks allotted to the question, decide how much you need to write in the answer. This will help you realise the explanation that you need to give. Remember to look at the sub-questions within the main question and divide your answers accordingly.

CBSE Biology Tips 4 - Separate Answers to Sub-Questions:

When you are answering any question having more than one part, write the answer of each and every part of the question separately. Your answer should also maintain the sequence in which the sub-questions are asked in the board exam.

CBSE Biology Tips 5 - Neat & Labelled Diagrams

Make sure to draw all diagrams neatly with proper labels. Keep in mind that the labels carry half a mark. When you are drawing graphs, take care to mark the x and the y axes and the different parts of curves with proper markings. Similarly wherever crosses need to be drawn, you should mark different generations, gametes, phenotypes along with genotypes.

CBSE Biology Tips 5 - 15 minutes Review Time

In board exams, the last 15 minutes of the paper should be utilized for review and revision of all the answers that you have written in the exam. While revising, revisit each and every question in the question paper and check your answers accordingly. You should make sure you have written correct question number for each answer. Also check if you have skipped any sub-question of the main question while writing your answers. If so write the answer to that sub-question.

Marking Scheme of Biology Class 12 CBSE Board Paper

Biology for class 12 CBSE board carries 100 marks (70 marks for theory and 30 marks for practical). Class 12 NCERT Biology syllabus is divided into 5 units. Marks assigned to each of these units are:

Unit 1 - Reproduction (14 Marks)

Unit 2 - Genetics and Evolution  (18 Marks)

Unit 3 - Biology in Human Welfare (14 Marks)

Unit 4 - Biotechnology and its Applications (10 Marks)

Unit 5 - Ecology and environmental issue (14 Marks)

A day before exam is one of the worst day if you feel you have not prepared well for the exam. This is the day when most students feel nervous, confused and sometimes depressed. The things to keep in mind a day before the exam are:

Biology Last Day before Exam Tip 2

Do not start studying any new chapter as it will only lead to confusion and may cause panic. If you have left any particular topic, go through it once and try to understand only the basic concept. Don't try to prepare it from the scratch. Take help from important reminders give at the end of every chapter in the NCERT book because there are important points of the chapter. Just go through them once.

Talk to your parents, siblings and other family members and share any feeling of anxiety or nervousness if at all you are carrying.

Don't stress yourself for the exam day. In the afternoon, play some games such as crossword, scrabbles or ludo with your family. Watch television and listen to your favourite music to de-stress yourself.

Do not forget to keep your admit card ready, a day before the exam. Diabetic students can carry some chocolates, fruits and sugar tablets provided they can present a certificate from a diabetic specialist.

Biology Revision Tips - How to Revise in a Week

 

Preparation of Biology subject in a week or couple of days from scratches is not possible. However, if you have studied biology thoroughly in the academic year, the last week or couple of days can be   effectively utilised to score almost perfect 100% in biology.

Biology Revision Tips 1 - Read NCERT

The students are advised to thoroughly go through each and topic of the NCERT book and revising the important ones more than twice. All the information and basic concepts required to answer biology questions are given in the NCERT book. Therefore, it is advised that you practice them well before you go to attempt biology paper in class 12 boards.

Biology Revision Tips 2 - Labelled Diagrams

Questions asking for diagrams will definitely appear in board paper. Therefore, you must practice important diagrams with proper labelling. You will get full marks if you draw neatly and your labelling is correct.

Biology Revision Tips 3 - Revise Short Notes

Biology Revision Tips 5 - Do not Start Anything New

Last week before board exam is not for starting preparation of chapters that you have never prepared during regular classes. This is the period for revision of the topics that you have already prepared. However, within each chapter if you are not clear about any concept, that must be read thoroughly.

Biology Revision Tips 7 - Prepare 3 Units Very Strongly

Make sure that at least following three units should be prepared very strongly. This will help score more marks in questions which are framed from these units. Important units that must be thoroughly prepared are Reproduction (14 Marks); Genetics & Evolution (18 Marks), and Biology in Human Welfare (14 Marks).

Thorough preparation of Biology along with other subjects for CBSE Board exam as well as competitive exams requires 3 to 6 months. If you fix a hard working schedule, you can prepare for board exams as well as NEET in 3 months. Following are the tips if you are planning for 3 to 6 months.

Biology Preparation Tips 1 - Set Your Goal

The most important step is to set your goal. Without goal, nobody can proceed in a right direction. If you haven’t set your goal, you must do it now. Write your goal at some place in front of you in your study room. This will keep you reminding what you are working for. Keeping in mind the final goal, you must fix some short term goals that you will be working for. It can be like completing so and so chapter this week, next week, this month and so on.

Biology Preparation Tips 2 - Study Plan

Make a realistic study plan. Decide the sequence of chapters in which you will be preparing them. Make daily schedule for self - study based on schedule of your school / institute. Your time table must include 10 minutes break after every hour of study plan. However, you must ensure that you go back to studies after this 10 minute break. While making any study plan you must devote half day per week to revision and half day per for practice. Your regular study plan must include reading theory, solving problems on each chapter from NCERT, Chapter-wise Previous years’ papers.

Biology Preparation Tips 3 - Good Biology Books

CBSE class 12th Biology has huge syllabus. So, it is essential for students to first study the topics given in the syllabus from NCERT textbooks. Afterward they can refer their class notes. We do not recommend any other book for biology. However, you can buy a good quality question bank for practice. Remember studying 5 times a good biology book is much better than studying 5 different biology books as far as Biology preparation for board exam and competitive exam like NEET. While studying, you should underline important terms and concepts in the book or class notes.

Biology Preparation Tips 4 - Make short Notes

During regular study you are expected to make your own short notes. These notes must include important formulae or statements and any fact that you tend to forget but is necessary to upgrade subject knowledge.

Biology Preparation Tips 5 - Regular Revision

Regular revision of topics that you have prepared is very important and is must do activity if you want to score well in Biology and to get success in academics. You must do revision of previously prepared chapters every week. It is ideal to devote 3-4 hour per week only for revision work. You can do revision from short concept notes prepared during regular study. You can also revise summery from NCERT Books.

Biology Preparation Tips 6 - Practice To Perfection

Practice makes a man perfect, a woman too. Therefore, you must allot some fixed time for practising questions on daily basis. You must solve all questions from NCERT and can use online resources like Moducation for more practice. You must solve questions that you were not able to solve from NCERT, Board Papers, Moducation question bank that you were not able to solve in earlier attempts.

Biology Preparation Tips 7 - Last Years’ Papers

Attempt sample papers/practice papers to identify the exam trends and your own weak areas. You must go through at least 5-10 previous year question papers of CBSE Class 12th Biology board exam. When you go through previous year papers, you will observe that some concepts in CBSE class 12th Biology are frequently asked in board exams, every year. You must include these important concepts from every chapter and go through them as they might be asked again in CBSE Class 12th Biology board exam 2017.
