When should a JEE or NEET aspirant start preparing for 12th board exam

Posted By Admin on October 27, 2018

When should a JEE or NEET aspirant start preparing for 12th board exam?

Most of the students preparing of JEE or NEET have joined one or the other coaching institute. They generally ignore board preparation and are mostly studying hard to qualify JEE or NEET only. However, there are several students who qualify JEE or NEET entrance exam but are unable to score qualifying marks in 12th board papers. In such case all the hard work done for JEE or NEET entrance exam gets wasted. To avoid such disappointment, students must timely start preparing for 12th class board exam.

During my career of training for JEE and NEET entrance tests, I have faced several questions from students or the parents of JEE or NEET class 12th students. Some of the questions asked frequently are:

When should a JEE or NEET aspirant start preparing for 12th board exam?

How can JEE or NEET aspirant simultaneously prepare for JEE or NEET and Class 12th board papers in last four months?

When is right time for JEE or NEET student to start focussing on class 12th board exam?

Is it advisable for class 12 students to stop preparing for JEE or NEET after December?

If you are also having these questions or other similar questions, this article is word reading. The article is provided by an expert faculty who has been teaching JEE main, JEE Advanced and NEET aspirants from last 20 years.

December to Mid-January Board + NEET / JEE Preparation:

During these months, students need to give complete focus on Board Preparation, see the pattern of writing question paper as per board pattern. They must also draw diagrams and charts wherever necessary for effective explanation

It is advised that students of 12th class should start giving considerable time for class 12th board studies from December onwards. From 1st week of December, students are advised to focus only on those chapters that are in class 12th board syllabus. Here also 30% of total self study time should be devoted to prepare theory part of the syllabus, 30% of self study should be given to practice board level questions and 30% self study time should be spent in questions asked in JEE or NEET past Papers. Remaining 10% time should be regularly invested in revision of concepts of 11th or 12th class that has been already prepared.

Mid-January to February End Board Preparation:

After 15th January focus on class 12th board preparation should be increased. During this period, students need to see the pattern of writing question paper as per board pattern. They must also draw diagrams and charts wherever necessary for effective explanation. 80% of total self study time should be devoted to prepare board syllabus and board level questions. However, NEET or JEE practice must not be completely stopped. 20% time must go to practicing JEE or NEET level questions else after board exams student feels completely out of touch from such questions.

During this pre board period, students must finish all the chapters of class 12th board syllabus; attempt all questions from class 12th NCERT or SCERT text books and must solve all questions asked in past board papers of last 10 years. It is advisable to mark and track (make a list) every formula or concept, every NCERT or SCERT question and every 12th board question that student feels uncomfortable or unable to recall / solve.

During Class 12th Board Exams:

During board exam there is lot of time between two board papers. During this time, students must revise all important formulae and concepts of subject of next board paper, attempt all questions from past board papers and NCERT question which could have not been solved earlier. Students who have effectively and smartly utilised pre board time period will certainly have an advantage and will be tension free during board exams.

We hope this article will help class 12 students preparing for JEE or NEET or any other competitive examination.
