More About NEET

NEET, National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, is the national level entrance exam for admissions into the medical courses like MBBS and BDS for the session 2018-19. It is compulsory for all colleges and universities approved by MCI/DCI (except AIIMS and JIPMER) to offer admission on the basis of NEET scores.

NEET for Foreign Medical Courses

According to latest news about NEET, Indian government is planning to make National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) compulsory for students going for MBBS courses outside India too. An official in the Union Health Ministry revealed, “Proposal regarding NEET for MBBS abroad is on the table and will be implemented from next year if it gets clearance”.

Benefits of NEET for Foreign Medical Courses

The proposal to make NEET mandatory for MBBS from foreign colleges is expected to improve quality of doctors coming to India after studying medicine in medical institutes in China, Russia and Ukraine etc.

The quality of medical education imparted in many countries abroad is substandard. Moreover, most of the students taking admission in these medical colleges are not competitive enough to qualify for medical education in India. The proposal is aimed to prevent such medical aspirants from getting a degree from foreign medical colleges merely on the basis of money and connections.

Moreover, the students pursuing MBBS from foreign medical colleges don’t get sufficient clinical exposure. Therefore, the doctors coming from these medical colleges are unable to perform in subjects like community medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology and paediatrics.

“There are concerns about the quality of the students who can easily get a degree in medicine from abroad and the poor quality of education being imparted in the institutions they go to.

“Most of the students getting MBBS degrees from foreign medical universities fail to pass Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (the test required to practice in India).

In last few years, the percentage of foreign medical graduates who have cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination has deteriorated. The absence of entrance tests in foreign medical universities is the main reason for substandard performance by foreign medical graduates in FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination).

By implementing the compulsion of NEET for Foreign Medical Graduate at the stage of admission government intends that only competent students should join medical colleges in foreign countries so that when they return they are at least able to qualify FMGE and start their career as a doctor.

Earlier Rules for Admission to Foreign Medical Courses

More than 5,000 students go outside India to pursue MBBS, mainly to China and Russia. Presently, any student who has passed class 12 or equivalent exam from any board with 50 per cent require only an Eligibility Certificate, a sort of No Objection Certificate (NOC) from MCI in order to take admission in foreign Medical colleges to become a doctor.

Popularity of Foreign Medical Courses

Candidates who want to make career in medicine in India have to face a tough competition because of very few seats in government medical colleges. Although there is large number of seats in private medical colleges, the annual fee of these private colleges is too high to be affordable for a middle class family.

Most of these foreign Medical colleges are included in the MCI approved list. Medical colleges in China, Philippines, Ukraine and Russia have become the top destinations for Indian students to pursue medicine because of easy entry, quality infrastructure, and low cost in these countries. Many students from south India are going to Philippines because it is an English speaking country.

What to do now to get MBBS degree from Foreign Medical Universities

Candidates who are thinking of getting MBBS degrees from abroad must start preparing for NEET 2018. “Those aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad will be given a No Objection Certificate (NOC) only if they have cleared NEET,” the official said.
